Geothermal Gets Recovery Act Funds

Geothermal energy will benefit from $338 million in Recovery Act funding from the US DOE.

The funds will be used to explore and develop new geothermal fields and for research into advanced geothermal technologies.

The cost-shared grants will support 123 projects in 39 states;  recipients include private industry, academic institutions, tribal entities, local governments, and DOE's national laboratories.

Kraft Foods Launches First Mainstream Sustainable Chocolate Brand

Kraft Foods is extending its commitment to sustainable cocoa farming by launching the first European mainstream chocolate brand to carry the Rainforest Alliance Certified(TM) seal.

By the end of 2012, the company has committed to use only cocoa beans from Rainforest Alliance Certified(TM) farms across its entire Cote d'Or and Marabou ranges, equal to some 30,000 tons of beans.

Portland, OR Adopts Aggressive Climate Change Policy

 

Portland, Oregon is adopting one of world's most aggressive programs in the US to reduce greenhouse gas emissions (GHG). The City Council passed a 40-year plan with a 4-0 vote.

Hopes for Copenhagen Dimming

European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso told reporters that a full-fledged international climate deal, along the lines of the Kyoto Agreement, won't happen in Copenhagen.

The most he sees possible is the creation of a "framework" that includes clear commitments from all countries, developed and developing. Commitments would include timetables on reducing emissions in developed nations and commitments on what actions developing nations will take.
